Konspirasjonsteorien handler om mistillit i det politiske systemet. Folk i Midtøsten har ingen tillit til myndighetene. De mistror alt de sier. Hvis offisielle medier sier en ting, regner folk med at det motsatte er tilfellet. At det som serveres kun er løgner.
Denne kynismen og mistilliten overføres på USA, og man kobler feks. Hosni Mubarak til USA: han er kun en nikkedukke.
Mistilliten til myndighetene er et resultat av korrupsjon og manglende representasjon, og mangel på lov og rett. Men samtidig er det uttrykk for at man ikke kjenner noe politisk ansvar. “Gata” snakker mobbens språk. Man identifiserer seg med myndighetene når det passer, og anklager dem når det er opportunt. Et slikt klima fremmer kynisme og mistillit, og en negativ, giftig kultur.
Hvordan dannes slike oppfatninger? Det dukker opp i aviser, TV, og gjentas mann til mann. Opplysningene om en “hemmelighet” fyller flere behov: både det pirrende ved å vite hvordan det egentlig forholdt seg, og samtidig slipper den arabiske verden å vende et kritisk blikk mot seg selv. Det er en frikjennelsesdom. Vesten har selv skylden.
